By the Numbers: UFC 308

Once Ilia Topuria found the range, his vaunted power took over.

After two competitive rounds, “El Matador” retained his featherweight crown with a third-round knockout victory against Max Holloway in the UFC 308 headliner on Saturday at Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi. In addition to improving his career record to 16-0, Topuria becomes the first person to knock out Holloway in 34 professional fights.

Here is a by-the-numbers look at UFC 308, with statistics courtesy of UFCStats.com.

7: Consecutive victories for Topuria, tying him for the longest active winning streak in the UFC’s featherweight division. That streak includes two wins in title bouts and triumphs over the likes of Holloway, Alexander Volkanovski, Josh Emmett and Bryce Mitchell.

5: Consecutive fights with a knockdown for Topuria, who has six knockdowns in UFC competition overall. Saturday marked the first time that Holloway had been floored in 30 UFC appearances.

.520: Significant striking accuracy for Topuria, who landed 75 of 144 attempts before the stoppage at the 1:34 mark of Round 3. Holloway landed 79 of 204 significant strikes — a 38% clip.

8:02:43: Total Octagon time for Holloway, making him only the second fighter in promotion history to spend more than eight hours in the cage. Only Rafael dos Anjos (8:41:49) has more fight time in the UFC.

4: Consecutive middleweight triumphs for Khamzat Chimaev, tying him with Sharabutdin Magomedov for the fourth-longest active winning streak in the division behind Dricus Du Plessis (eight), Caio Borralho (seven) and Anthony Hernandez (six). Chimaev defeated Robert Whittaker via face crank in the opening frame of their co-main event encounter.

4,745: Days since Whittaker’s last submission defeat, a first-round triangle choke loss against Hoon Kim at Legend Fighting Championship 6 on Oct. 30, 2011.

3:20: Control time — out of 3:34 total fight time — for Chimaev in victory. “Borz” held a 25-to-2 edge in total strikes, landed two of four takedowns and attempted one submission in a dominant effort.

55: Significant strikes landed by Magomed Ankalaev in a unanimous decision win over Aleksandar Rakic at light heavyweight. By comparison, Rakic landed 53. Ankalaev outlanded his opponent 23 to 19 in Round 2 and 13 to 12 in Round 3, while Rakic held a 22-to-19 edge in Round 1. Ankalaev also held a 75-to-59 advantage in total strikes landed.

0: Takedowns attempted by Ankalaev in victory. Ankalaev has landed more than one takedown just twice — against Jan Blachowicz and Nikita Krylov — during his UFC tenure.

8: Current unbeaten streak for Lerone Murphy (seven wins, one draw) following his unanimous decision triumph over Dan Ige. That’s the longest active unbeaten streak in the UFC’s featherweight division.

7: Knockdowns landed at featherweight for Ige, who floored Murphy in the opening stanza on Saturday night. That total ranks No. 6 all-time at 145 pounds.

11: Spinning backfist knockouts in UFC history after Sharabutdin Magomedov used the maneuver to dispatch Armen Petrosyan 4:52 into Round 2 of their middleweight pairing. Magomedov’s finish was unique in that he threw spinning backfists with both hands in the same sequence to put his opponent away. “Shara Bullet” has finished 12 of his 15 career triumphs via KO or TKO.

45: Significant leg strikes landed by Petrosyan in defeat. Magomedov, meanwhile, landed 12 significant strikes to the legs. Petrosyan held a 77-to-65 edge in total significant strikes landed.

14: KO/TKO triumphs among 14 professional victories for Ibo Aslan, who stopped newcomer Raffael Cerqueira 51 seconds into Round 1 of their preliminary light heavyweight clash. All but two of those triumphs have come inside of a round for the Turkey native.

28: Significant strikes landed by Islan during his blitz. By comparison, Cerqueira landed just one significant strike in defeat.

36: Octagon appearances for Rafael dos Anjos, tying him with Clay Guida for fourth most in UFC history. Only Jim Miller (44), Andrei Arlovski (42) and Donald Cerrone (38) have more. His latest outing, which also marked the Brazilian’s 40th birthday, wasn’t especially memorable, as dos Anjos suffered a first-round technical knockout loss to Geoff Neal as a result of an apparent knee injury.

2: Occasions in 49 professional bouts in which dos Anjos has been stopped inside of a round. The first time was at UFC Fight Night 90 on July 7, 2016, when the Brazilian suffered a technical knockout loss to Eddie Alvarez at the 3:49 mark of Round 1 in a lightweight title clash.

39: Significant strikes by which Kennedy Nzechukwu outlanded Chris Barnett en route to a technical knockout victory at the 4:27 mark of Round 1 in their heavyweight tilt. Nzechukwu landed 51 of 74 attempts — a 68% success rate.

1,701: Days since Ismail Naurdiev’s last Octagon appearance, a unanimous decision defeat to Sean Brady at UFC Fight Night 169 on Feb. 29, 2020. After a 3-3 stint in Brave Combat Federation, Naurdiev made a successful return to the promotion with a three-round verdict over Bruno Silva at middleweight.

23: Current unbeaten streak for Rinat Fakhretdinov, who took a controversial unanimous decision over Carlos Leal Miranda in the evening’s opening bout. That is currently the longest professional unbeaten streak of any fighter on the UFC roster. The Russian’s last — and only — defeat came on June 5, 2013.

6: Unbeaten streak in the UFC for Fakretdhinov, tying him with Shavkat Rakhmonov for the fourth longest among active fighters in the welterweight division. Only Belal Muhammad (11), Ian Garry (eight) and Jack Della Maddalena (seven) have longer unbeaten streaks in the Octagon at 170 pounds.

17: Takedowns defended by Leal. Fakhretdinov landed just two of his 19 attempts in the three-round affair, a success rate of 10%.

16: Unofficial media scorecards, of the 16 tracked by MMADecisions.com, that awarded the fight to Leal. Eleven of those virtual scorecards were 30-27 tallies for the Brazilian.
