By the Numbers: UFC 292

Sean O'Malley exceeded the hype on the largest stage possible.

“The Suga Show” left TD Garden Arena in Boston with bantamweight championship hardware in tow following a second-round technical knockout victory against Aljamain Sterling in the UFC 292 headliner on Saturday night. By ending Sterling’s nine-bout winning streak, O’Malley looks poised to become the big star the promotion has hoped he would become since he burst upon the scene on the initial season of Dana White’s Contender Series. Here is a by-the-numbers look at UFC 292, with statistics courtesy of UFCStats.com.

8: Bantamweight champions in UFC history. On Saturday night, O’Malley joined a group that includes Dominick Cruz, Renan Barao, T.J. Dillashaw, Cody Garbrandt, Henry Cejudo, Petr Yan and Sterling as the only men to have held the 135-pound belt.

2: Dana White’s Contender Series alums to have won a UFC belt. With his victory on Saturday, O’Malley joins ex-light heavyweight king Jamahal Hill as the only two athletes from the show who have captured a title.

6: KO/TKO victories for O’Malley, tying him with Rob Font and Marlon Vera for the second most in UFC bantamweight history behind only former champ T.J. Dillashaw (eight).

17: Significant strikes landed by O’Malley in the decisive second stanza, where he scored the fight’s only knockdown and connected at an 80% clip. Sterling landed four significant strikes in Round 2 after outlanding his opponent 13-8 in the first frame.

0: Takedowns landed in two attempts for Sterling.

4: Victories in strawweight title fights for Weili Zhang, who earned a dominant unanimous verdict against Amanda Lemos in the UFC 292 co-main event. That ties her with Rose Namajunas for the second most in the history of the division. Only Joanna Jedrzejczyk (six) has more.

163: Significant strikes landed by Zhang. By comparison, Lemos landed just 24. Zhang notably held a 96-to-0 advantage in significant ground strikes.

296: Total strikes for Zhang, a record for a UFC women’s fight. Lemos, meanwhile, landed 29. That included a fifth round where Zhang outlanded her foe by a 114-to-1 margin in total strikes.

16:07: Total control time for Zhang, who was successful on six of her seven takedown attempts — the most of her UFC tenure. Lemos did not attempt a takedown, and she logged just 34 seconds of control time in defeat.

2: Submission attempts for Lemos, which marked her only notable moments in the 25-minute affair. The Brazilian framed chokes from her back in the first and fourth rounds, but Zhang was able to defend on both occasions.

6: Consecutive UFC triumphs for Ian Garry, who authored a dominant unanimous decision win over Neil Magny. That’s the third-longest active unbeaten streak in the welterweight division behind Leon Edwards (12) and Belal Muhammad (10).

91: Significant strikes landed by Garry. Magny, meanwhile, landed just 27 in defeat. Garry’s most notable target was his opponent’s legs, where he held a 43-to-10 edge in significant strikes landed.

5: Consecutive victories for Mario Bautista, the second-longest active winning streak in the UFC bantamweight division behind Merab Dvalishvili (eight). Bautista captured a unanimous verdict against Da'Mon Blackshear in a featured contest at UFC 292.

10: Unofficial media scorecards, of the 14 tracked by MMADecisions.com, that scored the fight in favor of Blackshear. However, judges Sal D’Amato, Chris Lee and Steve Rita all submitted scorecards for Bautista. Blackshear outlanded his opponent 90 to 79 in significant strikes and landed four takedowns to his opponent’s two.

13: Victories at bantamweight for Marlon Vera, which ties him with T.J. Dillashaw for second most in UFC history. Vera defeated Pedro Munhoz via unanimous decision for his fifth win in six outings.

141: Significant strikes landed by Vera, the most he has landed in a three-round fight. (He landed 159 against Rob Font in a five-round affair). By comparison, Munhoz landed 113. “Chito” outlanded his foe 39 to 38 in Round 1, 49 to 45 in Round 2 and 53 to 30 in Round 3.

109: Significant head strikes for Vera. Munhoz, meanwhile, landed 53. However, Munhoz outlanded Vera 20 to 9 in significant body strikes and 40 to 23 in significant leg strikes.

41: Significant leg strikes landed by Brad Tavares in a unanimous decision victory over the returning Chris Weidman at middleweight. That’s a UFC career high for Tavares, who outlanded his opponent by a 70-to-37 count in significant strikes overall.

0: Takedowns landed in eight attempts by Weidman. It’s just the second time in 18 Octagon appearances that the Serra-Longo Fight Team standout has failed to land a single takedown. The first instance occurred against Uriah Hall in April 2021, when Weidman suffered a gruesome leg break 17 seconds into their fight.

1:43: Time of Gregory Rodrigues’ first-round technical knockout victory over Dennis Tiuliulin in their middleweight bout. That’s the quickest stoppage of the Brazilian’s professional career, which includes 12 finishes among 14 victories.

1: Two-time “Ultimate Fighter” winner in the history of the reality show. Brad Katona became the first to do so when he defeated Cody Gibson via unanimous decision in their bantamweight bout to win “TUF 31.” Katona also won “TUF 27” in 2018.

324: Combined significant strikes landed by Katona (160) and Gibson (164). That is the most in UFC history for a three-round bantamweight fight and the second most all-time behind the 430 combined significant strikes landed by Marlon Vera and Rob Font in their five-round affair at UFC on ESPN 35.

27: Significant strikes by which Gerald Meerschaert outlanded Andre Petroski in the third round of their middleweight bout. In the fight’s first 10 minutes, Petroski held a 42-to-34 advantage in significant strikes while also landing the contest’s only knockdown. Petroski ultimately emerged with a split-decision triumph.

2-5: Career record for Meerschaert in bouts that go the distance. “GM3” has 52 professional fights on his ledger; 45 of those have ended by knockout, technical knockout or submission.

4: Consecutive triumphs for Natalia Silva, the fifth-longest active winning in the UFC’s flyweight division. Alexa Grasso, Maycee Barber, Erin Blanchfield and Manon Fiorot are tied for first with five straight victories. Silva outstruck Andrea Lee to earn a unanimous decision in a preliminary 125-pound pairing on Saturday.

3,213: Days since the first meeting between Karine Silva and Maryna Moroz, an armbar submission victory for Moroz at XFC International 7 on Nov. 1, 2014. Silva exacted her revenge, at UFC 292 with her own first-round submission victory in a preliminary flyweight bout.

3: Consecutive first-round submission victories for Silva in the UFC. She is the first woman in the history of the promotion to secure three submission victories inside of a round. In addition to Moroz, Silva owns tapout victories against Poliana Botelho and Ketlen Souza. Silva also owns the longest active submission streak in UFC competition.
