Preparing for a postponed fight can be really tasking, as Chris Gutierrez recently found out.
Gutierrez was originally scheduled to fight John Castaneda at UFC 313 on March 8 in Las Vegas. However, Castaneda was forced out due to an illness just hours before the fight. The fight has now been rescheduled for UFC Kansas City â also known as UFC on ESPN 66 â which goes down at the T-Mobile Center on April 26.
Having been in camp longer than planned, Gutierrez has had to overcome certain problems. âEl Guapoâ revealed that at one point it felt like nothing was working out for him despite giving everything in training. However, Gutierrez and his team identified the issue early, which they think was overtraining. The featherweight veteran took a few days off which helped him recover, and he is now ready for Castaneda.
âIâve been in camp for like 21 weeks, still got three more left,â Gutierrez told Home of Fight. âItâs been a long camp. I think this camp was one of the camps where I was like, âMan Iâm not feeling good. Nothingâs firing.â I think it was a little bit of overtraining, but we caught it early⊠Itâs scary because youâre doing everything correct but nothing is working⊠So taking some time off, taking two or three days off, really using that downtime to just recover, not even thinking about fighting. Iâm glad we caught it early. But yeah overtraining is a real thing.â
Gutierrez is coming off a unanimous decision win over Quang Le and is 2-2 in his last four UFC outings. Meanwhile, Castaneda has also dropped two of his last four and comes off a unanimous decision loss against Daniel Marcos.
