Weekend Rundown: Yves Edwards Victorious at Raging Wolf 5

UFC, Strikeforce and EliteXC veteran Yves Edwards stopped Kyle Jensen on first-round strikes in the Raging Wolf 5 “Mayhem in the Mist” main event on Saturday at the Seneca Niagara Casino and Hotel in Niagara Falls, N.Y. The end came 2:44 into round one.

The 33-year-old Edwards has posted back-to-back victories, both of them finishes after his unanimous decision loss to Duane Ludwig under the Strikeforce umbrella 13 months ago. Based at American Top Team, he stonewalled Jensen’s takedown attempts, battered him with punches to the head and eventually stopped the World Extreme Cagefighting castoff, who entered the match unbeaten in 10 outings. Edwards has now recorded 29 of his 36 career wins by knockout, technical knockout or submission.

In the co-main event, Alexis Davis delivered her sixth win in seven fights, as she turned away Molly Helsel by unanimous decision.

Brenneman Captures VFL Title

Charlie Brenneman, one of the fast-rising stars on the East Coast, put another feather in his cap, as he captured the Valley Fight League welterweight championship with a first-round technical knockout against Phillip Wyman at VFL “Broad Avenue Brawlers 2” on Sunday at the Jaffa Shrine in Altoona, Pa.

Brenneman used patented takedowns and quickly moved from mount to side mount, where he dropped his heavy hands and elbows. However, it was from inside his opponent’s guard that he landed at elbow and stunned Wyman, sending his mouthpiece flying. Brenneman followed with more punches and elbows until the referee called a halt to the match 3:34 into round one.

Spawned by the same AMA Fight Club as Frankie Edgar, Chris Liguori and former International Fight League champion Dan Miller, Brenneman has posted five straight victories since suffering his only defeat as a professional -- a unanimous decision loss to current UFC welterweight John Howard at Ring of Combat 21 in September 2008.

Gunderson Submits Sharp

International Fight League veteran John Gunderson submitted Steve Sharp with a third-round kimura to win the MMA Xplosion lightweight championship in the featured bout at MMA Xplosion “Gunderson vs. Sharp” on Saturday at the M Resort Spa and Casino in Las Vegas.

Gunderson survived an early striking barrage from the aggressive Sharp and waited for an opportunity to strike in the third round. When the kimura presented itself, Gunderson cinched the shoulder lock and secured the tapout 3:17 into round three. The well-traveled 30-year-old has now delivered 16 of his 23 career victories by submission.
